If you’ve ever heard your dentist mention an endodontist, you may be thinking: What is an Endodontist and what do they do? Or you may be thinking “How will I know when I should see an Endodontist?” Here we will explain when to see an Endodontist and what they do.

What Does an Endodontist Do?

Endodontists are specialists that specialize in the study of the pulp of the tooth. They are likely to assist in situations where the treatment may have an impact on the root or pulp of the tooth. They may repair cracked or injured teeth, and are also known for specializing in root canals. You may see an Endodontist if your tooth needs saving and your general dentist feels you need the extra quality of care or chance of success an Endodontist may be able to give you.

When is the Right Time to See an Endodontist?

If you are experiencing pain or have a facial injury that is causing pain or swelling or has broken a tooth, setting an appointment to see an Endodontist right away can help them save the tooth. The longer you wait, the harder it will be for the Endodontist to save your tooth.

Should I ask my Dentist About an Endodontist?

If you are expecting to need a root canal, or have experienced an injury, you may want to ask your dentist to refer you to an Endodontist. This can give you a specialist with more experience with your particular needs, and may give you a higher chance of seeing a successful treatment. Ask your Dentist when to see an Endodontist if you’re not sure whether or not you need one for any specific treatment you may be asking about.
