A root canal is a procedure that cleans out decay, saving your tooth, and preserving your smile. If you’re experiencing discomfort and wondering if you may need a root canal, read on to find what signs or symptoms may indicate a trip to the endodontist is a good idea.
Persistent Pain or Sensitivity to Temperature
If your tooth is painful when touched, while you are eating, or highly sensitive to hot and cold, that may be an indicator of more advanced damage that may include the root or blood vessels in the area near the tooth, and could indicate that you may need a root canal.
Tooth Discoloration or Visible Injury
If your tooth is discolored, cracked, chipped, it may be an indicator of other decay, or the beginning of more advanced decay. Calling a dentist if one of these symptoms is present can help you determine what needs to be done to save your tooth, and whether or not you need a root canal.
Swelling of the Gums
If your gums are swollen and painful, this may be an indication of an infection in the tooth, or of periodontal disease. Asking your dentist to help determine which is happening can help you properly treat the problem. Both need treatment sooner than later.
Looseness
An infection in the tooth can affect the looseness of your tooth making it feel wiggly or strange, and could indicate deeper problems that may or may not need a root canal.
If you have any or all of these symptoms, talking to a dentist about what the cause may be can help you determine if you need to see an Endodontist for a root canal, or if there is another underlying problem that needs to be addressed.
